MMA has always been crazy sport when it comes to shocking endings to fights and Bellator is no different, as Joe Warren defeated Joe Soto at Bellator 27 to win the Bellator Featherweight Championship.
After getting dominated in the first round, Warren came back with a fury to knock out the former Champion with a vicious high knee and left hook that dropped Soto to the ground, prompting the referee to jump in and stop the fight.
"I told you I was going to win," proclaimed the new champ during the post fight interview. "I came in here and got the job done. I'm super happy to be a World Champion. This is the first time I've knocked someone out - there is a lot more to come."
Bjorn Rebney, Bellator CEO and Chairman was equally impressed with Joe Warren. "If you saw Joe Warren's fight with Patricio Pitbull in Season 2, most people would not of made it out of that first round, but Warren has that immeasurable heart that allows him to push forward. Tonight was no different."
Joe Soto came firing on all cylinders in the first round, landing his jab and combinations at will, sending the challenger on his heels on several occasions, leading to what many thought might be a one sided beat down in the fight, but Warren would have none of that. Warren, thanks in part to his will and iron chin, survived the round and came back, landing a right hook behind the ear of Soto in the second round to send him to the canvas. Warren pounced, landing some hammerfists and punches before Soto managed to get back to his feet. The fight didn't last much longer as Warren found a home for a knee to the head of Soto against the cage, following it up with a left hook that ended the night and the reign of the former champion.
The self-proclaimed "Baddest Man on the Planet" continued to impress the Bellator fans with this win, coming off the heels of his comeback win over Patricio "Pitbull" Freire, that saw Warren in equally as much danger in the first round of that fight as this one.
Joe Warren will make a quick turn around, as he gets ready to head to Japan for DREAM 16, where he will take on Michihiro Omigawa, on September 25th. |
